Frequently Asked Questions
What can I expect during my first counseling session?
For some, the first therapy session can cause a little nervousness and that’s okay! Our first time meeting is more of a “getting to know you” session: talking about what your hopes are for therapy and finishing up any paperwork that was not completed online before our appointment.
Who do you work with?
We work with individuals age 14 years old and older.
How can I contact you in between sessions?
If you need to contact us between sessions, please leave a message via text message or voicemail. We are often not immediately available; however, we will attempt to return your call within 24 hours during regular business hours (Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday from 11 AM to 7 PM). If you need medical assistance, please call 911. If you are experiencing a mental health crisis, please call your local crisis hotline. You can find a list of crisis hotlines here.
What types of payments do you accept?
For clients who have co-pays or are private pay, we accept cash, check, credit card, and health savings accounts (HSA). Payments are due the day of service.
Do you accept insurance?
We currently accept Aetna, Geisinger Health Plans, Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield, Optum and University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC). We only accept commercial insurance. We are not contracted with any Public or Community plans. Commercial health insurance is health insurance provided and administered by public and private companies, rather than by the government. We do NOT accept Medicare, Medicaid, or other State funded community or public health plans (i.e., UPMC for You).
What is your cancellation policy?
To cancel your appointment, a 24-hour notification is required, otherwise, you will be charged a cancellation fee.
What is confidentiality?
The session content and all relevant materials to your treatment will be held confidential unless you request otherwise in writing to have all portions of such content released to a specifically named person/agency. Limitations of such client-held privilege of confidentiality exist and include, but is not limited to: if a client threatens or attempts to commit suicide and/or bodily harm to self or others; suspicion of abuse or neglect of children under the age of 18; and the client is under guardianship or has a power of attorney.
What is Mandated Reporting?
The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania defines mandated reporters as “certain adults, who are legally required to report suspected child abuse if they have reasonable cause to suspect that a child is a victim of child abuse.” Learn more about mandated reporting at Keep Kids Safe.
Is therapy right for me? Are we a good fit?
Those are questions only you can answer!
Therapy is a great tool for those who want help and guidance with any of life’s challenges. There is no denying that therapy is hard work and requires an open mind. Change does not take place without patience, effort, and persistence. Services at Speak Life Counseling Services are person-centered and tailored for your needs.
If you feel that we do not connect, that’s okay! We will not be offended and will be able to work with you to refer you to someone that would be a better fit for you and your needs.
